Early Life
José Luis Sánchez del Río was born on March 28, 1913, in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico. From a young age, he was devout and had a strong devotion to the Virgin Mary. He was also deeply influenced by the martyrdom of Blessed Miguel Pro and other Cristeros who fought against the secularist and anti-Catholic policies of the Mexican government.
Involvement in the Cristero War
When the Cristero War began in 1926, José was only 13 years old. Despite his youth, he was eager to join the insurgents, who were fighting for religious freedom in Mexico. His parents initially refused to let him join, but he eventually gained their blessing and joined the Cristero forces.
Martyrdom
José’s commitment to his faith was profoundly tested during the war. Captured by government forces in early 1928, he underwent severe torture to renounce his faith, including having the soles of his feet flayed and being forced to walk towards his grave. Despite the agony, José remained steadfast, reportedly shouting “Viva Cristo Rey!” (Long live Christ the King!)—the battle cry of the Cristeros—as he was executed by gunfire on February 10, 1928. He was only 14 years old.
Canonization and Legacy
The process of his canonization began in 1996, and he was declared a martyr by Pope Benedict XVI, paving the way for his beatification in 2005 and subsequent canonization in 2016.
