Feast Day: February 15
Patronage: Brescia, Italy
Saints Faustinus and Jovita were brothers and noble citizens of Brescia, Italy, who lived during the early 2nd century. They were renowned for their unwavering faith and courage in the face of persecution under the Roman Emperor Hadrian (reigned 117–138 A.D.).
Zealous Preachers of Christ
Despite the severe persecutions against Christians, Faustinus, a priest, and his brother Jovita, a deacon, fearlessly preached the Gospel throughout their city and beyond. Their fervor in spreading the Christian faith attracted many converts, including high-ranking officials, which angered the Roman authorities.
Their zeal and popularity brought them to the attention of Julius, the imperial governor, who ordered their arrest. They were subjected to numerous tortures, yet they remained steadfast in their faith.
Tortures and Miraculous Deliverance
The brothers endured brutal persecutions:
- They were thrown to starving lions, but the beasts refused to harm them.
- They were burned with fire, but the flames left them unscathed.
- They were cast into a deep pit, but divine protection sustained them.
Their endurance and the miracles surrounding their torments astonished many, leading even some of their persecutors to convert to Christianity.
Martyrdom
After years of imprisonment and torment, the brothers were finally beheaded in 120 A.D. in Brescia, sealing their testimony with their blood. Their relics became a source of veneration, and their sacrifice strengthened the faith of the early Church in northern Italy.
Veneration
Saints Faustinus and Jovita have been honored since ancient times, especially in Brescia, where a magnificent church was built in their honor. Their feast day, February 15, is a solemn celebration in the region, commemorating their example of heroic virtue.
Their lives remain an inspiration to all Catholics, especially in times of trial and persecution, reminding us of the words of Christ:
“Blessed are they that suffer persecution for justice’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:10)
