Our Lady of Good Counsel

The devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel is one of the most tender and mysterious in the Church’s Marian tradition, intimately bound to divine providence, filial trust, and the guidance of souls.

🌿 Origins in Scutari (Albania)

The story begins in the 15th century in Scutari (Shkodër), Albania, where a revered image of the Blessed Virgin was venerated in a church dedicated to her. This image depicted Our Lady holding the Christ Child, both with expressions of serene wisdom and quiet gravity—an icon of divine counsel offered to the faithful.

At that time, Albania was under grave threat from the advancing Ottoman Turks. Among the faithful were two devout souls, Georgis and De Sclavis, who had a deep love for the image. As the Turkish invasion loomed, they prayed fervently that the Mother of God would preserve her image from desecration.

✨ Miraculous Translation to Genazzano

In the year 1467, on the Feast of St. Mark (April 25), a wondrous event occurred. The sacred image vanished from Scutari. At the same time, in the small Italian town of Genazzano, near Rome, the townspeople witnessed a miraculous phenomenon.

A luminous cloud descended upon the dilapidated Church of St. Mary. Within it appeared the very same image of the Virgin and Child, which came to rest upon a wall—suspended without visible support, not attached to the surface behind it. The image remains there to this day, slightly raised from the wall, defying natural explanation.

Georgis and De Sclavis, guided by divine inspiration, followed the vision across the Adriatic Sea and arrived in Genazzano, where they recognized the image as the one from Scutari.

🕊️ The Image and Its Message

The fresco itself is modest in size but profound in expression. The Virgin inclines her head gently toward the Child Jesus, who clings to her neck—a gesture of intimate trust. Their faces radiate a quiet solemnity, evoking contemplation and the seeking of divine wisdom.

Thus, she is invoked as Our Lady of Good Counsel, the one who gently guides souls in moments of uncertainty, offering not worldly answers, but divine direction aligned with God’s will.

🏛️ Papal Recognition and Devotion

The devotion quickly spread throughout Italy and beyond. The Augustinian Order, who cared for the shrine in Genazzano, became ardent promoters of the devotion.

  • Pope Paul II approved the cult shortly after the apparition.
  • Pope Leo XIII, deeply devoted to Our Lady under this title, added the invocation “Mater Boni Consilii” to the Litany of Loreto in 1903.
  • Numerous saints, including St. Pius V and St. Alphonsus Liguori, had a strong devotion to Our Lady of Good Counsel.

🌹 Spiritual Significance

Our Lady of Good Counsel is especially invoked:

  • In times of doubt or confusion
  • When making important life decisions
  • For guidance in moral and spiritual matters

Her counsel is not merely practical—it is supernatural, leading the soul toward holiness and conformity with Christ.

🙏 Traditional Prayer

O Mother of Good Counsel, obtain for us from thy Divine Son a great love of virtue, and, in the hour of uncertainty and trial, the strength to embrace the way that leads to our salvation. If thy hand sustains us, we shall walk unmolested along the path indicated to us by the life and words of Jesus, our Redeemer; and having followed freely and securely, even in the midst of this world’s strife, the Sun of Truth and Justice, under thy maternal Star, we shall come to the enjoyment of full and eternal peace with thee in the haven of salvation. Amen.
