Sts. Marcellinus, Peter, and Erasmus: Bishops and Martyrs

St. Marcellinus and St. Peter

Life and Martyrdom:

  • St. Marcellinus was a priest, and St. Peter was an exorcist in the Church. They lived during the time of the Diocletian persecution in the early 4th century.
  • Both were known for their fervent faith and dedication to spreading Christianity despite the severe persecutions.
  • They were arrested and imprisoned for their faith. While in prison, they continued to evangelize, converting their jailer and his family to Christianity.
  • Their martyrdom was notable for its cruelty: they were beheaded in a forest called the Silva Nigra (Black Forest) outside Rome around the year 304.
  • The precise location of their graves was revealed by divine revelation to a Christian woman named Lucilla, who had their bodies recovered and given a proper burial.

Legacy:

  • Their courage and faith have been celebrated throughout Christian history.
  • Pope Damasus I (366-384) wrote an epitaph for them after hearing their story from the executioner himself.
  • They are commemorated in the Roman Canon of the Mass (Eucharistic Prayer I).

St. Erasmus of Formia

Life and Martyrdom:

  • St. Erasmus, also known as St. Elmo, was a bishop in Formia, Italy, during the late 3rd and early 4th centuries.
  • He is one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, venerated especially in the Middle Ages.
  • During the Diocletian persecution, he was arrested and tortured for his faith. According to legend, he miraculously survived many severe tortures.
  • He is said to have been subjected to having his intestines wound onto a windlass, a symbol often depicted in art.
  • Despite these tortures, he continued to preach and perform miracles until his death around 303 AD.

Legacy:

  • St. Erasmus is the patron saint of sailors and is invoked by those seeking protection from stomach ailments.
  • His name is famously associated with “St. Elmo’s fire,” a weather phenomenon often observed by sailors at sea.
  • His relics were initially housed in Formia, but were later transferred to Gaeta after Formia was destroyed by the Saracens in the 9th century.
